Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play is so far the only smartphone designed for playing games. It is also the only Xperia smartphone from the 2011 range without an official update to Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Below you can find the latest firmware for the phone and also three tutorials - how to unlock the bootloader, how to relock the bootloader and how to backup the original firmware.

First of all one important thing - before you start to do anything with your phone, please do a backup of all your personal data. This is mainly for insurance, just in case something goes wrong or you make a mistake. If that happens you can simply restore the backup and go through everything again from the beginning. Each tutorial has been performed several times by many different people to verify its validity, so just read all the instructions carefully and continue step by step. For all Sony (Ericsson) XPERIA smartphones we provide a manual consisting of 4, 5 or 6 "HOW TO" chapters. Our tutorials will of course be updated whenever Sony Mobile releases anything new that may affect any of our tutorials. All important files have been uploaded to Google Drive, so there should be no problem downloading them. Each file has been created by myself and has been tested on the corresponding phone. In this guide for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play you can find some photos and videos showing you how to proceed, but the most important instructions are the written tutorials. All files linked in this article are designed specifically for Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play R800i. So what can you expect from our tutorials?

The following 4 tutorials are available:

  1. How to install the newest firmware for your phone (for Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play R800i it is currently firmware version 4.0.2.A.0.62)
  2. How to backup your original firmware (in case you need to send your phone to service)
  3. How to unlock the bootloader (in case you want to install custom kernels with recovery menu and much more)
  4. How to relock the bootloader (in case you want to go back to stock (original) ROM or you need to send your phone to service)

And now let's do all 4 actions step by step

How to install the newest firmware for Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play R800i

  1. First of all, check your firmware version (if you already have the latest version, you do not need this tutorial)
  2. download and install latest Flashtool from here (mirrors Google Drive or Mega)
  3. Download also latest Android 2.3.4 (mirror) for Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play R800i
  4. Move the ftf file downloaded in step c) to the folder "Firmware" included with the XPERIA Flashtool
  5. Open the XPERIA Flashtool, click on flash, choose the downloaded firmware, then click OK. Important - if you do not want to delete any data stored on your phone, just uncheck "userdata.sin". All your data will remain on your phone, however this can sometimes can cause some issues. It is better (and I recommend that) to do a backup of your personal data, than proceed with a clean instalation and then restore your personal data.
  6. Turn off your phone and when Flashtool shows a pop up window, connect the phone to your PC while holding the volume down button
  7. After a few minutes all is done and your phone will be running the new firmware

How to backup your original firmware

  1. If you do not want to lose your phone's warranty, the first thing you should do is backup your original firmware
  2. Download Sony Update Service (SUS) and install the latest firmware for your phone (backup your data first)
  3. After that, go to SUS folder in Program Files and search for folder db/some_Number/blob_fs. You'll find 3 files which start with FILE
  4. download and install latest Flashtool from here (mirrors Google Drive or Mega)
  5. Copy the three files which start with FILE from blob_fs folder to the "Firmware" folder included with the XPERIA Flashtool
  6. Open the Flashtool, click on Advanced, choose decrypt files and move the three files from blob_fs folder to the right column
  7. Click OK and after a minute or so a pop up window will appear from Flashtool
  8. Select all files and move them to the right column, then fill in a box in the right upper corner (fill in what you want, it is just for you)
  9. Now click OK and Flashtool will create a backup of your original firmware that you can flash any time to your phone
